With the pregnant women I see everywhere, friends giving birth and pregnant friends, I have decided to research on new born checklist and add some of the things I feel are important. So if you are about to get pregnant, are pregnant, or expecting a newborn, here are most of the things you would be needing as you anticipate the coming of your bundle of joy. Yippee! Things you definitely need
  • Cot or crib  plus mattress, sheets and blankets( not all kids would use a cot, most times they become “the guest on your bed”
  • Make sure you buy at least 2 sheets and blanket because you definitely would need especially in the newborn stage.
  • Car seat with neck support. This is very important for the safety of your child
  • Six sleep suits/long sleeved suits
  • Six vests/short sleeved suits
  • Two cardigans/jackets
  • Hat, mittens and Bootees
  • Changing mat. This would most likely come with your baby bag
  • Diapers for newborn. Don’t buy too much of this one because they grow quickly out of this.
  • Bottles/teats/bottle brush. This is essential especially if you are not breastfeeding or you decide to express breast milk
  • Nursing bra and breast pads
  • A lot of bibs (12-24 packs… Trust me you would need that much)
  • Plenty of towels/ flannels/ muslin squares (for bathing and dribbles!)
  • Cotton wool
  • Baby Bath
If you want to take it up a notch, this is what I recommend as handy things to have: List of Things that are Handy
  • Moses basket / crib (mattress, sheets and blankets)
  • Baby box or bag
  • Sling or baby carrier
  • Bouncy chair or rocking chair (I used a rocking chair that swings my baby back and forth. It was very helpful as it would rock her to sleep and once she is on it, I am free to do what I have to do)
  • Baby monitor
  • Changing bag
  • Breast Pump
  • Baby lotion
  • Unscented baby wipes
  • Bath thermometer ( most likely come with your baby bath)
  • Baby grooming kit (Includes Baby Nail clippers, brush, etc.)
  • Baby Thermometer (to check for fevers)You will need this.
  • Diaper rash ointment
  • Rattles and small toys
  • Dirty diaper Bin
  • Baby monitor with 2 receivers
  • Changing table
  • Plastic wipes holder (for the diaper bag)
  • Nursing pillow is very very helpful, it helps with the baby’s positioning in breastfeeding
  • 6 bottles equipped with newborn nipples
  • Bottle brush
  • Insulated bottle holder for diaper bag
  • Nursing bras
  • Nursing pads for bras
  • Breast pump
  • Methylated spirit
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Digital thermometer
  • Bulb nasal aspirator
  • Mild soap for laundry
  • 4 receiving blankets
  • 2 cotton blankets
  • Cradle or bassinet with cotton sheets
  • 2 crib mattress pads
  • Stroller
  • Sun shields for car windows
  • Portable playpen
  • Diaper bag
  • Sling or soft front carrier
  • Bouncy seat
  • Dresser
  • Baby music CDs or audiotapes
  • Play mat with toys attached
You might feel like this is a long list of items to get. Most of these items come in packs. For instance, the baby bibs can come as a pack of 12  and that can save you a whole lot of cost in purchasing them individually. Some breast pumps come with bottles and this can really help if you want to save costs not buying extra bottles especially if you get a good breast pump that would work well for you and your baby. The bottom line here is to make sure you do your research, get the right products that would work for yourself and your growing family. Congratulations in advance, on the new addition! We would love to hear more on what you mums think is essential to get before your newborn arrives. Feel free to leave a comment and send cute pictures of your newborn’s arrival so that we can all rejoice with you. Share your story on B2M.
