Remember the rape victim… What to do immediately after? Then you would like to know more on the  subject, like how to speak with a rape victim and others. Rape can be avoided by taking certain measures below, these include:
  • Do not stay out late. Being responsible enough to get home before dark can save you from rapist who look out for preys at night and from armed robbers or even kidnappers.
  • Lock up your apartment before nightfall, don’t entertain night visitors, let it be a policy.
  • Drink wisely, and do not get drunk in a party, the drinks could have drugs in it, its an old boys trick to randomly rape ladies in parties.
  • Do not talk sexual in public, it could arouse a rapist who might be just around the corner.
  • Do not meet up with Internet friends, its always a dead end, your female Internet friend could turn out to be a male rapist.
  • Do not be shy to turn down sexual advances towards you, if the person persists in his or her advances, tell people around you and if it increases, please alert the police, the person might become a stalker or a rapist, doesn’t matter if its your boss.
  • Do not go to a friend’s house without telling anyone.
  • Do not allow the opposite sex spend a night in your apartment or be extremely careful about it, the person may not rape you but can molest your kids or young ones during the night hour, while you are fast asleep. As for wives, don’t be so kind as to allow your husband’s best friend sleep over, especially without the permission of your husband, same for men, you might not be raped by a woman but she can heavily seduce you to cheat on your spouse, so find a way to avoid sleep overs.
  •  Do not be suspicious of rape, rather be assertive. Be smart to read the hand writings on the wall and leave the environment as soon as possible.
  • Do not walk alone at night and always be among people in  events, people you trust!
  • Do not be too afraid to scream in an event of attack, scream ‘’fire’’ and not ‘’help’’people respond faster to  the sound of fire. Your attacker might want to get your sympathy or scare you, be bold because you might still end up being raped and killed for recognizing or seeing their face, you might be beaten too, screaming shows you do not want it and cannot tolerate it and all you need is for someone to hear you.
  • Do not be afraid to use harmful objects in self defence against an attacker or a rapist.
  • You can go for a defense course for self defence of any kind, the rapist can be weaker than you think and you may just happen to know better.
  • Always keep your phones charged,  It could be your saving grace in a tight corner, not necessarily to call but for text.
  • Parents do not leave your kids with an opposite sex for too long or for whom you do not trust, do take the risk and always call to check on them as often as possible.
  • Married spouse do not starve your partner of sex, you could lead them into raping your maid, sister or friend. An accumulated libido can be unpredictable in terms of damage, just like the adage goes,’’a hungry man is an angry man’’.
  • Mothers do not leave your babies with careless or irresponsible individuals especially giving your babies to the opposite sex to bath or to change diaper, please be careful.
  • Mothers always examine your kids, do not over look any signal and ask leading questions like ‘’do you like that aunt or uncle and why’’, investigate properly if you suspect anything.
Finally there are statements you should and should not make to a rape victim, these includes the following: STATEMENTS NOT TO MAKE
  • What were you thinking?
  • What were you wearing?
  • Why were you drunk?
  • You must report to the police!
  • That wasn’t rape!
  • You were leading him or her!
  • So you mean you have lost your virginity!
STATEMENTS TO MAKE
  • I believe you.
  • I’m sorry this happened to you.
  • This was not your fault.
  • I`m here if you want to talk.
  • I`m here if you do not want to talk.
  • How can I help you.
  • You are not alone.
I also suggest that you tell it to Jesus the healer and ask the comforter, the Holy Spirit to comfort you or the victim. I rest my case at this junction dear readers. By Cynthia Nwokwule
